Brunello di Montalcino: Tuscany's most celebrated red
Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most celebrated wine, and also its rarest and longest-lived. Made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes grown on the slopes around the hilltop town of Montalcino, it is one of Italy's greatest and most collectible reds. What makes Brunello unique
Unlike Chianti, Brunello is made from a special Sangiovese clone known locally as Brunello, prized for its layered complexity and dense, dark fruit. By law the wine must be aged a minimum of four years before release, including two years in oak barrel, with Riserva bottlings aged even longer. This extended maturation builds the structure, firm tannins and bright acidity that let the best bottles evolve gracefully for decades, developing aromas of cherry, leather, tobacco and dried herbs.
Serving, cellaring and pairing
Young Brunello benefits from decanting, while mature examples reward patience in the cellar. Serve at cool room temperature in a large glass. Its power and acidity make it a classic match for Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, aged Pecorino and other rich, savory dishes. A well-aged Brunello is a centerpiece wine for a special occasion.
