David Schildknecht has to be given credit for “discovering” this estate. Indeed, Schildknecht was the first person to import the wines to the U.S. back in the 1980s. Since the reintroduction of Lauer to the U.S., the estate has gone cult. It’s a status they most certainly deserve; the wines are among the best being made in Germany. These wines are grand and pure Saar Riesling – the emphasis is on purity, precision, rigor, mineral. The great majority are sourced from the great Ayler Kupp Vineyard and named after the pre-1971 vineyard names from which they come. The focus is on “dry-tasting” wines that flaunt an exceptional, ethereal balance, an interplay of sugar and acidity that is as fine as any in the world of wine.
