DESCRIPTION

Château La Violette is a Bordeaux winery in Pomerol that makes a limited-production varietal Merlot. It's one of several châteaux owned by Vignobles Péré-Vergé which includes the other Pomerol sites Château le Gay and Château Montviel. The wine is made from a vineyard slightly smaller than 2 hectares (5 acres), bought by Péré-Vergé in 2006. The vineyard is divided into four plots of vines, some planted in the 1950s, and farmed by the same workers as Montviel and Le Gay. Historic Cabernet Franc plantings were replaced entirely with Merlot, which suits the soil's high clay content. Violette practices de-budding, green harvesting and makes two or three passes during harvest based on the vine age and individual plots. The grapes are harvested and de-stemmed by hand before fermenting and aging in entirely new French oak for 12 to 18 months. La Violette makes fewer than 400 cases a year of its single wine

Expert Notes

James Suckling: 93

Aromas of raspberry and blueberry. Hints of chocolate too. Full body, firm tannins and a velvety texture. Very pretty and balanced. Drink or hold. Old vine merlot here.
