Only True Wine Connoisseurs Know These Top Rare Wines
Have you ever wondered what makes wine rare? Perhaps you're on the hunt for a rare wine to impress your better half. Here are a few top rare wines.

Wine Rarity

What makes wine rare? If you've ever seen vast fields of grapes and vineyards, then you likely can't imagine that wine could ever become rare. However, there are certain factors that can make a certain bottle of wine a rare vintage. For one, it may be based on the winery. Single vineyard wines are rarer than multi-plotted wines. The size of the vineyard also plays an important role.

Certain wineries only offer a limited number of bottles each year. For example, one winery might only produce 300 bottles whereas another might produce 3,000 or 30,000. Because there are few bottles in circulation, the wine already is considerably rarer than those that are mass-produced.

Another reason that wine might become rare is because of the quality of the year's grapes. Sometimes, the harvesting of grapes doesn't go over well. Changing weather can have a negative impact; hail, rain, and scorching suns can affect the harvest and production level. Some years might produce more barrels than others with such unpredictable conditions.

Grapes can be eaten away by pests or just don't achieve as hearty of growth as they have in the past. In this case, the bottles that are made of the grapes that pass quality checks are fewer in number. This leaves the winery only able to produce a few bottles instead of a larger number.

If you're thinking about collecting or trying some rare wine, then you might want to consider some of these top rare wines.

1. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

If you're wondering what the most expensive wine on the market currently is, it's likely the Romanee-Conti from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti winery. Their bottles tend to go for $19,000. The vineyard only stretches about 4.47 acres in Burgundy. This Pinot Noir wine is only produced in small numbers and only ever produces from high-quality grapes. In 2018, two of the most expensive bottles of Romanee-Conti were ever sold. One bottle sold for $558,000 while the other sold for $496,000. Both bottles were from the year 1945.

2. 1796 Lenox Madeira

Another rare vintage is also one of the oldest. Lenox Madeira from 1796 is considered to be the oldest wine currently on the market. It's currently in New Jersey in the Liberty Hall Museum. It was found with other vintages and spirits and likely thought to be hidden away during prohibition.

3. Krug Clos d'Ambonnay Blanc de Noirs

If you want the rarest champagne on the market, then you need to look for the Krug Clos d'Ambonnay Blanc de Noirs. Only 4,500 bottles of this vintage were produced. It was produced in 1995, and with the aging process underway, these bottles of champagne are extremely difficult to find these days.
