The Denomination of Origin Penedès extends through the south of the province of Barcelona and part of Tarragona. The climate and its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea are the ideal components for growing its vineyards. The cava wines made in this region are considered the best in the world.
The variety of soils added to their climatic differences make the wines of an excellent quality. The wines with the highest production are the whites, characterized for being light, aromatic and low-bodied wines. On the contrary, the production of red wine is small, however the production of sparkling wines and rosés predominate a little more.
The most important variety is the Xarel.lo, a white grape. Other types of grapes are the Macabeu and Parellada. In recent years, other varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc have also been introduced. All of them make the wines of the D.O. Penedès have a smooth texture and a perfect balance between acidity and alcohol.
