The Cascade Range wrings most of the moisture out of Pacific storms before they cross into eastern Washington, leaving parts of the state's wine country with well under ten inches of rain a year. Vines survive there only with irrigation, which hands growers unusual control over vigor and ripening speed. Mark Ryan's 2020 Lonely Heart Cabernet Sauvignon is a product of that engineered desert.
