By the fifteenth century, English merchants were trading Malvasia under the name Malmsey, and legend has the Duke of Clarence drowned in a butt of it, a scene Shakespeare kept for Richard III. Broadbent's 10 Year Malmsey, blended from casks matured on Madeira, still sells under the merchants' old name.
