A Merlot grown in the Chianti hills cannot be sold as Chianti Classico, since that DOCG is built on Sangiovese; wines like the 2018 Girolamo from Castello di Bossi go out under Tuscany's wider IGT rules instead. Merlot spread through the area during the 1980s and 1990s, when estates replanted vineyards that had been laid out for volume.
