Chateau Batailley, whose 2017 is bottled as a straight Pauillac, lies inland from the Gironde in the southern part of the commune toward the Saint-Julien line, on a plateau of deep gravel over clay. Gravel that deep drains hard and holds the day's heat, which is why so much Medoc vineyard sits up on those rises and so little on the flat ground between them.
