Chateauneuf-du-Pape's boundaries were drawn up by local growers in 1923, more than a decade before France formalized its appellation system, and the rules there still permit a long roster of grape varieties inside one red. Clos St Joseph's 2020 rouge draws on Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache, the trio behind most southern Rhone reds.
