Bastide is a southern French word for a country house or working farm, and it turns up on wine labels as an estate name rather than a grape or a region. Carignan, the variety given for this 2022, buds and ripens late and tolerates drought, which is why old plantings of it survive across the Languedoc, in Sardinia, and in Rioja, where growers call it Mazuelo.
