Rutherford built its reputation one quip at a time, most famously when André Tchelistcheff observed that it takes 'Rutherford dust' to grow great Cabernet. Elizabeth Spencer's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is labeled under this mid-Napa appellation. Formal AVA status came surprisingly late, in 1993, decades after the district's name already meant something to Cabernet buyers.
