Pinotage came out of Stellenbosch University in 1925, when Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut; the grape stayed a curiosity for decades before growers built a serious category around it. Kanonkop's 2022 is straight Stellenbosch Pinotage, made in the district where the crossing was first bred.
